The Super Nintendo: My Childhood’s Greatest Escape

From Yoshi’s back in Super Mario World to banana peels on Rainbow Road and jungle swings with Donkey Kong—how one chunky gray box created the best Saturdays of my life.

I can still hear that iconic startup chime and feel the heavy gray controller in my hands. Saturday afternoons disappeared into Super Mario World as I chased every secret exit on Yoshi’s back, battled friends in Super Mario Kart, and swung through the jungle with Donkey Kong and Diddy. Those 16-bit adventures weren’t just games—they were pure magic. But one Christmas morning changed everything when I finally unwrapped my very own SNES… and discovered a world I never wanted to leave.

Saved by the Bell: Screech Was My Guy, and Those Early Morning Bus-Stop Rush

Waking up extra early for cereal and Bayside High chaos before the school bus—those stolen minutes with Zack, Kelly, and my favorite awkward genius made every school day better.

The alarm went off way too early, but I didn’t care. I’d stumble into the living room in my pajamas, cereal in hand, just to catch Saved by the Bell before the school bus arrived. Zack’s schemes were funny, but Screech? He was my guy—the awkward genius with the wild laugh and even wilder inventions. Those stolen thirty minutes made the whole day better. Until one morning when Screech pulled off his craziest stunt yet… and I almost missed the bus completely.

Friday Nights: Pizza Hut, Video Mania, and VHS Magic

Deep-dish pizza, arguing over movie rentals at our favorite little video store (sorry Blockbuster), and family nights that turned ordinary Fridays into something unforgettable.

Fig. 3 — a 90s kid doing what it takes to survive. Eating pizza and watching a movie.

Every Friday night followed the same perfect routine: pile into the car for hot Pizza Hut deep-dish, then head straight to our little local spot, Video Mania (never the big Blockbuster). The smell of fresh pizza mixed with the plastic scent of VHS tapes as we argued over which movie to rent. Those nights felt unbeatable—until the night we brought home a tape that had us laughing so hard we couldn’t breathe… and created a memory I still can’t top.
